We will examine what “data quality” really means at the most elementary level – codes, attributes, entities, relationships, and databases. Dimensions of data quality at the most fundamental level will be developed and these will be related to each of the identified “data” sub-components. We will examine how fundamentals of Data Quality concepts relate to business requirements defined by business customers, metadata, data integration, and roles and responsiblities of data stewards. Mention will be made of Deming’s quality principles and how they relate to data quality dimensions. The result will be a clear framework in which each data quality dimension can be addressed, understood, measured and bench marked.

Shiraz Kassam is an independent consultant with over 20 years of industry experience. He has worked for Fortune 500 companies through North America as a senior data architect. He is a life long student, researcher, and commentator. Past presentations include the DAMA 2003 conference and the Canadian Information Processing Society (CIPS) annual and 2006 TDWI conference.
