LOGICAL AND PHYSICAL DATA MODELING

A 5-DAY SEMINAR and WORKSHOP with WILLIAM G. SMITH

Logical and Physical Data Modeling
The logical data modeling portion of this seminar teaches the disciplines necessary to form, define, and standardize data elements so that they can be shared for all business purposes, instead of being tailored to fit only one use or point of view (as was common in "systemland"). The principles of normalization are taught in a natural and practical manner to ensure that the organization of the data is also optimal for all uses.
The physical data modeling portion of the seminar teaches a very sophisticated method for quantifying the physical constraints imposed by the business (performance of certain transactions, data volume limitations, physical distribution of the data at different locations, security protection of selected data, etc.), and for creating a best-balanced physical design of the database which meets those (sometimes conflicting) constraints without sacrificing the natural subject organization of the data.

Extensive workshops in both logical and physical data modeling ensure that the student leaves this seminar with internalized, usable and practical skills.

Seminar Objectives

This seminar begins where Conceptual Data Modeling: The Entity/Relationship Model ends, completing the set of skills necessary to move from the gross analysis of business information requirements to the actual physical implementation of sharable, subject-oriented databases which will markedly improve business performance and profitability.
