Conceptual
Data Modeling: The Entity/Relationship Model
Data subjects (entities) are shared across functional, process, and
organizational boundaries in the business, and so this model (and the
databases which will be built from it) is the lynchpin for removing
waste, float, and unnecessary time and cost in the conduct of the
business processes. It is also useful to conceptualize data to be
shared directly with customers and suppliers to further collapse float
and cost in these types of business transactions. A conceptual data
model also surfaces conflicts and ambiguities in the business rules
which inevitably lead to quality problems for the customer of the
enterprise, and gives the business a golden opportunity to "clear up a
few things around here" in a very organized and methodical manner. This
form of modeling can be applied on an enterprise-wide scale, or on the
smaller scale of a development project. An extensive workshop fully
develops modeling skills.
