Facilitating Cross-boundary Data Sharing Via Persistent Identifiers
Persistent identifiers are used to provide a global, unchanging handle for information resources. This session provides an overview of the most commonly used identifier schemes, including Persistent URLs (PURLs), Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs), Life Science Identifiers (LSIDs) and INFO URIs. Extensions to PURLs suitable for identification of Semantic Web resources and XML namespaces will be addressed. The public PURL service, operated continuously since 1995 by the non-profit Online Computer Library Center (OCLC), is being updated to support these extensions. Architectural considerations for the use of persistent identifiers are provided, along with guidance for the management and cross-boundary operation of persistent identifier schemes.
