The implementation of geospatial data layers within the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) requires the development of data standards to enable them to become ‘National Data Layers’. These standards are needed so that internal and external users such as the public have a consistent and shared understanding when using the information. The BLM National Geodatabase would not exist without data standards, and patterns provide a more effective and consistent development process.

BLM data architects use patterns (data models for standard business situations) for developing data standards. These patterns are then used to design the physical database and implement feature-level metadata. As an example, we will use one of the first patterns developed, Boundary. We will discuss how this pattern is being reused for other BLM Boundary layers and how it is advancing the development of geospatial data standards across our organization.

Speaker Bio
Chris Hawkinson is currently a data architect working for G&B Solutions as a consultant for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Department of Program Management. She has worked extensively in the area of data modeling for Worldcom and the Denver Water Department in Colorado. At St. Paul Companies and Broadway and Seymour in Minnesota she worked with projects on both data and process modeling. Chris is a certified Project Management Professional and Facilitator.

Thomas A Chatfield is currently the geospatial data architect for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) working on data modeling, data and metadata standards, and database design for national geospatial data layers within the BLM. Tom is retired from the Coast Guard Reserves and has previously worked on geospatial data efforts supporting utilities, Nuclear Emergency Response, and in environmental issues.
