Auckland City Council (in New Zealand) gathers and stores increasing amounts of complex, descriptive data about the 160,000 properties it administers. Auckland City’s data needs to be complete, accurate and readily accessible to meet the business’s regulatory requirements and to provide in-demand information products to customers. The digitisation of data has given Auckland City the chance to address its data quality requirements head-on. Specific challenges have included the storage of data in various repositories, degradation following data migrations, and reliance on third-party software packages and data models.

Addressing these challenges has involved establishing an information management capability, including data quality skills, within the business unit. So far, this has resulted in:
- Greater alignment between data creation and business requirements.
- Information being available as a saleable product.
