AWARD WINNERSWinners of the second annual “Wilshire Award” recognizing best practices in Meta Data management were announced on Monday, April 21, 2003. The award is given to a corporate data organization to recognize business value, innovation, and excellence in design and/or implementation of meta data as a critical component in data management success.
In commending the award winners, the publisher of DM Review, Ron Powell, said "The winners of the Meta Data Best Practices Award have demonstrated they understand the true business leverage gained from effective meta data management. They’ve also shown they are capable of realizing that leverage through innovation, management commitment, and of course, hard work." Acknowledging the award, R. Todd Stephens, BellSouth’s Director of Metadata Services Group, reiterated the importance of the meta data strategy at his organization: “BellSouth is delighted to have won this year's Enterprise Meta Data award. Over the past three years, we have dedicated ourselves to building a repository collection that delivers true business value to the enterprise. Metadata is an imperative to building an enterprise environment and I can't see any organization being successful without a solid metadata strategy. This award is really a reflection of the dedication, commitment and never-ending focus of the individuals that make up BellSouth's Metadata Services Group.” Chairman of the judging panel, Tony Shaw of Wilshire Conferences, remarked on the closeness of the judging: “The quality and quantity of nominations was remarkable this year, resulting in very tough competition. The judging was very close. I think it’s evident that management of corporate meta data is an increasingly important priority for organizations in all sectors, and this was reflected in the high quality of the submissions we received.” What was it that set the winners apart? According to Shaw, the leading companies demonstrated substantial ROI, and proved the biggest meta data impact across enterprise IT assets. Among the judges, Robert Seiner, publisher of TDAN.com and founder of KIK Consulting, said “BellSouth’s meta data program is among the best organized I have seen. It has a strong management team and is producing well-defined benefits.” Karen Lopez, president of InfoAdvisors, said “the senior management support and commitment at BellSouth is evident. The meta data ROI is clearly enabled by that commitment.” The judges selected Allstate Insurance to receive the Outstanding Data Warehouse Meta Data Implementation award on the strength of its homegrown codes management solution. Award judge Sid Adelman of Sid Adelman & Associates complimented many aspects of Allstate’s meta data program, including “good reuse, the stewardship is well done, and they have employed an interesting use of meta data to communicate requirements to outside data vendors.” Linda Hall, Systems Director, Enterprise Data Services at Allstate said: “We are extremely gratified to have won the Wilshire award this year. This is great validation of the effort Allstate has put into the development and implementation of Warehouse Metadata to enable our business initiatives.” Presentation of the Wilshire Award will take place on April 30, 2003 at the Wilshire Meta-Data Conference & DAMA Symposium, in Orlando, Florida. Ron Powell, of DM Review magazine, and co-sponsor of the award, will make the presentation.
