ERP Data Models for OUR Enterprise

We have never had a comprehensive set of data models for our ERP system (JDE). The models we do have are piecemeal, some being generic vendor models while others were done for individual projects. This is a common problem with ERPs and other 3rd party applications – either no data models exist or the models are generic and do not accurately reflect the local implementation. We are planning a consolidated effort to model our ERP environment. The goal of this project is to provide a base set of models that will facilitate IT cross-training, application support and data integration. We have already completed the first two steps, identifying the data modeling approach we plan to take, and developing a detailed list of instructions on how to produce the models most effectively. We will be piloting the approach this fall, to validate the practicality and effectiveness of our instructions and the resulting models. I will share the approach we are taking, and the learnings and results of our pilot. Questions we are addressing include

Her background in computing (B.Sc. in Computer Science, M.Sc. in Human-Computer Interaction, and 12 years as a developer for operational and data warehouse applications) has given her an appreciation for effective data modeling. Her current focus is on broadening the acceptance and use of data models, as an effective component of communication within IT and with the business and as an invaluable tool in application development and application enhancement/support.
