The Advanced Course on Data Governance

Monday 8:30am - 4:15pm

Level: Intermediate/Advanced

By now, most organizations have at least experimented with data governance. But too many governance programs are wrongly positioned, ill-focused, and under-manned. It is no surprise that organizations are disappointed in the results. Veterans know that everything about data is political. Those interested in advancing data governance must recognize political realities, avoid “data minefields,” build political capital, and take advantage of opportunities when they present themselves. This workshop will begin to cover the tough issues, including the business drivers that will advance, or stymie, governance, data sharing, privacy and security, and agreed-upon definitions of common terms like “customer.”

A few highlights:
  • What “manage data as an asset” really means.
  • The surprisingly brutal politics associated with data and their implications for data governance.
  • Defining and deploying management accountabilities for data.
  • The non-delegatable roles of senior management.
  • Resolving the tensions between IT and the business.
  • Meta-data processes and how to establish common definitions.
